“We need you to clarify your calling” is one of the most common reasons I hear that candidates are delayed in their process, and yet what does that mean exactly?
We all have a calling, and we all have a call story. While we may internalize our calling and fully comprehend our place in God’s plan for the world, communicating that can be difficult. This is often exacerbated by the generational and cultural differences between the candidate and their team members.
One of my favorite techniques to help people clarify their calling is to have them watch Simon Sinek’s TED talk “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”. In this, he makes the powerful statement of “It’s not what you do, it’s why you do it”.
So much of our call story can turn into what we desire to do in ministry and we forget the importance of why we want to do it. Check out this great TED talk and see if you are spending too time time on the “what” and not enough on the “why”.
